7 young adult horror books to read in 2017 based on your fave tv shows

MTV’s Scream: YA horror thriller books

Are you dying for some young adult horror / thriller titles to put on your reading list for 2017? Well, you’re in luck. We have a list of seven chilling YA books to sink your teeth into based on what you love to watch on the small-screen.

If you love MTV Scream, American Horror Story, Bones, and just dark television in general, get ready to put these titles on your wish list!

If you like Pretty little liars:

One of Us is Lying

One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus tells the thrilling story of how five strangers walk into detention, but only four walk out alive.

Much like Pretty Little Liars, the book takes place in a high-school setting where everyone is a suspect and no one can be trusted.

Outcast Simon’s death is ruled an accident… but the juicy secrets he planned to reveal about all four of his high-profile classmates makes each of them a suspect.

Having already gained a 4.59-star rating on Goodreads from early reviewers, One of Us is Lying is definitely one to put on your to-read list this year.

One of Us is Lying will be released May 30th, 2017.

Little Monsters

Little Monsters is a psychological thriller that delves into appearances versus reality and the power of manipulation amongst teenage girls.

Written by Kara Thomas the Author of The Darkest Corners, Little Monsters follows the story of Kacey, a girl who moves to Broken Falls with her father, stepbrother, stepmother, and half-sister.

Kacey finds her new life in Broken Falls charming compared to her old one with her volatile mother, and she is swiftly welcomed into a tight-knit circle of friends. But, all hell breaks loose when her new friends, Bailey and Jade, begin to act distant and don’t invite her to the biggest party of the year. Kacey’s life is turned upside down when Bailey never makes it home from that party, and everyone looks to the new girl for answers.

Much like Pretty Little Liars, Little Monsters explores how the loss of a friend can thrust you under the microscope and make you second guess everyone you used to trust.

Little Monsters has been given a 4.11-star rating by early reviewers on Goodreads.

The book will be released July 25th, 2017.

If you like MTV Scream:

There’s Someone Inside Your House

There’s Someone Inside Your House is a YA whodunit story by Stephanie Perkins, the international best-selling Author of Anna and the French Kiss.

The book is said to be an epic slasher and is described as ‘Scream meets YA’.

The story follows Osborne High students as one-by-one they are killed off in a series of gruesome murders.

If, like us, you are experiencing some serious withdrawals awaiting the next season of MTV Scream, then perhaps this is the book to get your hands on.

There’s Someone Inside Your House has been given a 3.8 star rating by early reviewers on Goodreads, and will be released September, 12th 2017.

If you like American Horror Story:

House of furies

House of Furies is an all new gothic horror series written by New York Times best-selling Author Madeleine Roux, known for the Asylum series.

House of Furies follows seventeen-year-old Louisa Ditton who scores a job as a maid in a boarding house, after escaping a school of harsh punishment. However, she soon comes to realise that Cold thistle House isn’t everything that it seems.

The house’s owner Mr. Morningside and his staff provide much more than lodging for his guests and execute their own justice on those who are past being saved.

In House of Furies the line between monsters and men is said to be ghostly thin.

This title seems like a safe bet for those who loved American Horror Story: Murder house and American Horror Story: Asylum, but are looking to mix it up with a bit of lighter-teen fiction.

House of Furies has an early reviewer rating of 4.5 on Goodreads and is set released May 30th 2017.

If you like Bones:

To Catch a Killer

Are you keen for a mystery thriller entangled with some forensic science? Then To Catch a Killer might be right up your alley. The book is penned by Author Sheryl Scarborough who brought you episodes from nostalgic television shows such as Kim Possible and Clifford the Big Red Dog.

The book follows Erin Blake, who as a toddler spent three days alongside the corpse of her murder mother. Now years later when she discovers the body of her biology teacher, she finds herself once again at the center of a brutal homicide. Erin suspects that her mother’s killer struck again in order to protect the secret casework the teen has been doing on her own.

Much like Bone‘s Dr. Brennan, Erin has a fondness for forensics and a drive to do whatever it takes to solve the murder mysteries that plague her. Inspired by her FBI uncle, Erin has taken a full-blown cold-case investigation into her own hands.

To Catch a Killer was released on February 7th, 2017 and currently has a Goodreads rating of 4.07.

If you like Dead of Summer:

Camp so and so

If your looking to read a campy thriller Camp So – and – So  will give you just that. Much like Dead of Sumer and a boat load of B-rated 80s – 90s horror films such as Friday the 13th, Camp so – and so is of course set entirely in a camp. Written by Mary McCoy Camp – So – and – So features supernatural and fantasy elements.

The camp follows twenty-five campers in five cabins.

“Cabin one: faces of against their rivals the posh campers across the lake, who may be more than they seem.

Cabin two: is being stalked by a murderous former camper.

Cabin three: sets off on a quest to break an age-old curse.

Cabin four: will meet their soulmates — who also pose a deadly threat.

And for Cabin 5…well, it might already be too late.”

Camp so – and – so has a Goodreads early reviewers rating of 4.29 and will be released March 1, 2017.

If you like Lost:

The Sandcastle Empire

While this one isn’t exactly marketed as a horror/thriller title, it felt like a shame not to include it. The Sandcastle Empire is a Science Fiction Dystopian novel that was recently picked up by Paramount Pictures. It will definitely be one to look out for as Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson are already signed up and on board to work as producers on the adaptation.

Written by Kayla Olson, The Sandcastle Empire takes place in 2049 when climate change, coastal flooding and overpopulation sends the earth into disarray. A radical group called the Wolfpack have taken over control of the earth and its recourses. After the Wolfpack killed her family and friends, destroyed her home, and held her prisoner, Eden decides to move to the only neutral ground left, Sanctuary Island. But, she discovers that Sanctuary Island is filled with lethal traps and an enemy she never expected.

The proposed dangers on Sanctuary Island bring us back to Lost, where characters were constantly plagued by the weird creepy things the island thrust at them.

If you like reading the book before the story heads to the screen, this is definitely one worth checking out.

The Sandcastle Empire currently has an early reviewers rating of 4.59 on Goodreads, and is set to be release June 6th 2017.
