It is International Women’s Day, in celebration we have put together a video showcasing 6 horror films directed by some incredibly talented women.
Horror is often perceived as a male genre, while many women adore getting the chills from watching spine-tingling flicks filled with blood and gore, unfortunately, females make up an extremely marginal amount of people working within the film and television genre. In fact, according to ‘The Celluloid Ceiling‘, the longest-running study of women’s behind-the-scenes employment in film, women are least likely to work in the fields of action and horror, and only account for only 11% and 12% of those working on these fields.
“A lot of people, when I spoke to them, as a woman, and said, ‘Oh, I’m directing a horror film,’ it was like I was directing a snuff film or porno or something terrible,” said Director of Babadook Jennifer Kent in an interview with Washington Post.
“The view on horror is that bad […] It will shift, as the world shifts […] Women do love watching scary films. It’s been proven, and they’ve done all the tests. The demographics are half men, half women. And we know fear. It’s not like we can’t explore the subject.”
But it isn’t just the horror genre that is lacking female filmmaker talent. Only 26% of women were said to have worked in the film industry as creators, directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors and directors in photography, in 2015-2016. This percentage is only marginally higher than the 25% recorded in 2014-2015 and remains unchanged from the values discovered in 2012-2013.
