In an interview with Complex, Writer and Director James Gunn confirmed that, yes, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will definitely be going ahead.
“There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure,” said Gunn.
While the news doesn’t come as a surprise to fans of the Marvel franchise, Gunn’s interview brought up a possible catch.
In his interview, James Gunn spoke about his positive experience creating the Guardian films, and confessed his personal connection with the franchise. The Director went so far as to say that Guardians of the Galaxy V.2 was the most creatively fulfilling filmmaking experience he has ever had.
“It’s an incredibly personal film for me. It feels strange when it’s a movie about a talking racoon and a bunch of aliens and space battles, but to me, it’s a personal story, which seems to be something so far that the audiences have seemed to understand immediately,” he said.
While Gunn expressed his fondness for bringing the 2-time Oscar nominated franchise to life, he may be preparing his schedule for alternative projects. It is possible that the filmmaker, who is currently promoting the release of The Belko Experiment, could be in the motions of passing on the directorial baton within the next couple of weeks.
“I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”
Whether or not James Gunn will be sitting in the director’s chair for the third film is still up in arms. While everything is speculation for now, it is possible that he could still leave his mark on the franchise by stepping into the role of Producer or perhaps continuing on as a Writer.
In fact, in an interview with Screen Rant in 2014, not long after the release of the first film, Gunn confessed that he already had plans for Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
