Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have dropped the trailer for Annabelle: Creation, which, as the name suggests, tells the origin story of the possessed doll who made her introductory appearance in 2014 in the film Annabelle.
Directed by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out), the prequel takes place several years after the tragic death of the daughter of a dollmaker and his wife. When they welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, the house guests soon become the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.
The new film has a lot to live up to. While its predecessor may have received mixed reviews from moviegoers and critics, it did ring up nearly $257 million at the worldwide box office during its run in theatres. The film is also part of The Conjuring universe, which earned $320 million at the worldwide box office for its sequel film The Conjuring 2.
Annabelle: Creation is directed by Sandberg from a screenplay by Annabelle writer Gary Dauberman who also penned the upcoming film Stephen King‘s It. The film stars, Stephanie Sigman (Spectre), Talitha Bateman (The 5th Wave), Lulu Wilson (Ouija 2, Deliver Us from Evil), Philippa Coulthard (After the Dark), Grace Fulton (Badland), Lou Lou Safran (The Choice), Samara Lee (Foxcatcher,The Last Witch Hunter), Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace) and Miranda Otto (Homeland, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) and Tayler Buck (American Crime Story).
