Josh Brolin has just signed on to play Cable for Deadpool 2. As a follow-up to last years breakaway hit in the X-Men franchise, Deadpool 2 promises to expand the world to the darker end of the X-Men universe with the introduction of Brolin as his on and off frenemy Cable.
Deadpool 2 is set to continue the story of the last film with Ryan Reynolds returning as the Merc with a Mouth under the new direction of David Leitch. Another new face joining the sequel will be Atlanta’s Zazie Beetz as the Mercenary Domino.
This news came as a surprise for many due to Brolin’s current role in the Disney branch of Marvel Pictures as the villain Thanos, The Mad Titan. The role has been under great speculation for months now. Michael Shannon (Man of Steel, Boardwalk Empire), David Harbour were both approached. There were even rumours of Russell Crowe and Brad Pitt being offered the role as well.
From the teaser that played before Logan, we’ve already been given a bit of a taste of the next darker step of Deadpool’s journey. This sequel looks like it’ll take the Merc with a Mouth into all new set of danger joined by the brooding cyborg time traveller Cable. Fox is certainly taking some bold new steps forward with the X-Men world.
With Brolin’s loaded history with comic book movies (Jonah Hex, Marvel films) there will be even more reason to break that fourth wall.
Deadpool 2 is currently set for a 2018 release.
