Search no more, globe trotter Carmen Sandiego will soon be settling down in her new home on Netflix!
Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez, who is best known for her role on the CW show Jane the Virgin, will voice the red cloaked character in the upcoming Netflix animated series. Rodriguez will be joined by Stranger Things‘ Finn Wolfhard who will voice the character ‘Player’, Carmen’s accomplice and friend.
Netflix has ordered 20 episodes in total, each 22 minutes in length. Artist Kevin Dart, who has worked on the Steven Universe and the Powerpuff girls, will be in charge of the show’s visual design alongside Chromosphere studios. Duane Capizzi (The Batman) will act as co-executive producer and showrunner of the series, with CJ Kettler (The Tick) acting as executive producer.
The upcoming show is based on the iconic educational/mystery video game franchise which launched in 1985. In the original game Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? players were asked to track down the thief and her villainous minions by following a series of clues. In order to beat the game, players needed to discover the culprit of the crime before they reached Carmen to pass on the stolen loot.
The Netflix series will be the second animated tv show based on the red-cloaked antagonist. The original animated series ‘Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?’ hit television screens in 1994. The 90s animation followed the basic plot of the game on which it was based. Agents Zack and Ivy (under the guidance of the Chief) were tasked to put a stop to criminal Carmen and her organisation V.I.L.E. who had stolen a bunch of items. In the original series, Player was the only live action character and was seen behind the computer screen at the start and end of each episode.
Netflix’s iteration will be the first to dig deep into the origins of Carmen Sandiego, exploring how and why she became an international criminal.
