Director Christopher Griffiths has launched an Indiegogo campaign for his new film Pennywise: The Story of IT, featuring interviews with Pennywise actor Tim Curry, as well as behind the scenes footage from the 1990 miniseries. Now, only six days in, the fixed-goal documentary has managed to raise 80% of its £20,000 objective.
Clowns have been an icon of mischief and horror for centuries. In fact, the early history of the ‘evil clown’ can be traced all the way back to 1662. Despite this, one fear-inducing red-nosed symbol of evil has taken the world by storm. Pennywise, the drain occupying villain of Derry, is perhaps the most widely recognised evil clown in modern pop-culture. With director Andrés Muschietti’s It set for release in September, there is no doubt that Stephen King’s horrific clown story is fresh on the mind.
Now, thanks to Dead Mouse Productions and Cult Screenings UK, fans may finally get the opportunity to explore the story behind the popular 90s mini-series. If funded, the project will feature over 30 interviews. Twenty interviewees are already onboard, including, It mini-series director Tommy Lee Wallace, actor Tim Curry, and special effects artist Bart Mixon. In addition to cast and crew interviews, the documentary will feature hours of behind the scenes footage.
Created by the makers of ‘You’re so cool, Brewster! The Story of Fright Night’ and ‘RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop’, pre-production for Pennywise: The Story of IT is already underway. Full production will commence late July and early August, with shooting taking place in LA, Canada and Maine.
