VP of Netflix original content Cindy Holland today announced that Sense8 is coming to an end. The news, which has caused some major stir amongst fans of the series, comes not long after Netflix cancelled their hit series The Get Down after its first season. Alongside two major cancellations, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings hinted that there could and should be more cancellations to come. The change could bring Netflix into the same realm as the average television network, where beloved shows are cancelled and abandoned despite their cliff-hanger end.
“Our hit ratio is way too high right now,” said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.“So, we’ve cancelled very few shows … I’m always pushing the content team: We have to take more risk; you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall.”
The sci-fi drama, from The Matrix filmmakers the Wachowskis, gained recognition for its representation of both culture and sexuality. While some agree with Netflix’s decision, others have likened the end to the cancellation of Joss Whedon‘s cult series Firefly.
Netflix has yet to provide an official reason for the cancellation, but reports suggest Sense8’s second season had an exponential estimated budget of $9 million per episode.
“It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable,” said Holland in a statement issued by the streaming giant.
“Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world. We thank Lana, Lilly, Joe and Grant for their vision, and the entire cast and crew for their craftsmanship and commitment.”
With news of the abrupt cancellation beginning to spread, many fans are wondering how many of their fave Netflix shows will suffer the same fate.
Bad Move Example: Cancelling #Sense8… on the first day of Pride Month. I would very much like this show renewed, please & thank you.
