It is official, thanks to Netflix movie-watchers’ secret love of Adam Sandler, the comedian is coming back in style. So much so, Netflix users are watching a whopping five hours of Sandler on average.
While Adam Sandler was a must-watch during his prime in the 90s, best known for his films, Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore, there is no denying that the star’s reputation has gone downhill in the last couple of years. A simple google search will tell you that a lot of people love to hate the comedian, who is often on the receiving end of some pretty harsh criticism. In fact, Sandler managed to receive a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes for his film The Ridiculous 6, which garnered some pretty harsh reviews:
“Stream at your peril.” – Nick De Semlyen
“Did Nick Nolte survive the filming of this?” – Josh Larsen
“Thanks for nothing, Netflix.” – Richard Roeper
While The Ridiculous 6 was annihilated in terms of critic and moviegoer reviews, Netflix statistics tell a much different story. While people love to share their hate for the film, many are watching it in secret. In fact, Netflix, who are notorious for keeping their statistics under wraps, revealed that The Ridiculous 6 was the most-watched Netflix film at launch.
“We continue to be excited by our Sandler relationship and our members continue to be thrilled with his films,” says Content Chief Ted Sarandos. “Since the launch of The Ridiculous 6, Netflix members have spent more than half a billion hours enjoying the films of Adam Sandler.”
The actor, who has made an estimated $50.5 million in the past 12-months according to Forbs, has recently struck it big-time with a Netflix deal which will see four Sandler films released exclusively on the streaming platform. According to Netflix’s statistics, 500 million hours of Sandler movies are watched by members, this equates to an average of five hours of Sandler, or 2.86 Adam Sandler movies watched on average per subscriber.
Correction: The article linked above stated that 3.44 movies were watched per subscriber. However, the math confused 1.45 hours with 1 hour 45 minutes. We have fixed this above. Thanks to a keen-eyed reader for pointing this out.
