The Conjuring franchise is expanding with yet another spinoff, this time with a movie based on The Crooked Man. According to THR, the screenplay for the newest film in the ever-growing franchise will be penned by Mike Van Waes.
After the enormous success of the two Conjuring films and prequel spinoff Annabelle, which collectively earned $897 million worldwide at the box office, New Line is getting to work on yet another film in the Conjuring universe. Having already produced spinoffs based around a possessed doll and creepy nun, the new film sets its sights on The Crooked Man.
The Crooked Man made its debut appearance in James Wan‘s universe in The Conjuring 2, which starred Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Lorraine and Ed Warren, who were investigating the Enfield Haunting.
Originally, The Crooked Man was conceived from an English nursery rhyme recorded by James Orchard Halliwell in the 1840s. While there is a lot of speculation about the influence behind the rhyme, one of the major theories is that the poem is based on the wool trading village of Lavenham, in Suffolk, England, which features unusual looking crooked houses and slanted architecture.
There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile.
He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile.
He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all lived together in a little crooked house.
In addition to The Conjuring franchise, the crooked man has been featured heavily in pop-culture, being included in an early Batman story, the video game The Wolf Among Us, the comic book Hellboy: The Crooked Man and Others, and more recently in the third season of Fargo.
While the Crooked Man’s appearance in The Conjuring 2 got some fan’s hearts pumping, others were quick to point out the unrealistic appearance of the sharp-toothed character. The Conjuring’s The Crooked Man certainly looked a little off, but despite popular belief, the villain was not created with CGI, instead, the creature was portrayed by Spanish horror actor Javier Botet.
James Wan and Peter Safran will produce the next chapter in the ever-growing universe. The film will be the third spinoff in The Conjuring franchise, following Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation which will hit theatres Aug. 11, and The Nun which is set for release July 13, 2018.
