Cyborgs, cowboys and Westworld fans rejoice! Even though we’re a year away from its release, Westworld’s director Jonathan Nolan has taken fans by complete surprise and released the season 2 premiere title… Well, kind of.
For a show that is almost as fun for fans to piece together as it is to watch, the mysterious nature of the reveal should come of no surprise. However, Nolan has proven, yet again, that he’s still got plenty of tricks up his sleeve. He unexpectedly posted the following image in response to a Reddit thread asking, “can we end the endless maze image posts?”
Followed by Nolan’s resounding “nope”, it seems we haven’t quite reached the centre of the maze just yet.
A plastic smiley face maze covers some of the title and Nolan seems to be having a chuckle at Reddit’s expense. Despite this, fans clung on for dear life and were quick to speculate. Though a number of theories arose, users came to the likely conclusion that the premiere would be titled “Journey Into Night”- the title of Dr. Robert Ford’s final defiant narrative.
Some users are hoping desperately for a Watchmen/Westworld crossover, starring Rorschach as a self-aware maze dweller- my personal favourite theory was “Journey Into Ninjaworld”, that snippet at the end of season one has left many a fan begging for a better look into Delos Incorporated’s other Worlds.
Though there is no specific release date for Westworld, Casey Bloys, the programming president at HBO speculated that the season wouldn’t be hitting screens until 2018.
Till then, fans will continue to re-watch and overanalyse Westworld frame-by-frame and shot-by-shot until they reach the centre of Nolan’s wonderfully bewildering maze.
