Ron Howard is set to become the new director for the untitled Han Solo movie, following the unexpected dismissal of Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s directorial role in the film. The news was confirmed by the official Star Wars Twitter account today, who welcomed Howard into the role.
According to THR, the move comes just two days after directing duo Lord and Miller were let go, despite spending an unprecedented four-and-a-half months on the project. The pair were said to have creative differences with veteran screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, disagreeing on the style and tone for the upcoming Lucasfilm and Disney production.
When news first broke about Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s dismissal from the role, fans and Hollywood were flabbergasted, the film was already three-quarters the way through its principal photography – a major directorial switch this late in the game is extremely uncommon.
Despite this, the film seems to have landed a safe choice with Ron Howard, who is the Oscar-award-winning director behind the breathtaking 2002 film A Beautiful Mind, as well the 1995 film Apollo 13.
Howard is said to be meeting with the cast, including Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke and Thandie Newton, to put a flustered set at ease. Filming is set to resume July 10.
“At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm.
“With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”
Ron Howard has quite a presence in Hollywood, both as a director and an actor. A slew of fans and members of Hollywood have taken to Twitter to announce their appreciation of his work, and to wish him luck in the new role.
The untitled Han Solo film is slated for a May 25, 2018, release. Check out some of the internet’s reactions below:
