The first trailer for the Jumanji sequel, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, is here – but this time it isn’t a boardgame that is going to unleash dark jungle mysteries.
In the controversial modern sequel to the beloved 90s family classic, Sony Pictures throws away the board and opts to bring the world of Jumanji into a video game. The 1995 film originally starred the renowned comedic actor Robin Williams, and took the adventure into the player’s home. Each roll of the dice caused chaos as booby traps, wild animals and disastrous threats were thrust into the game player’s ordinary surroundings.
In the new adventure, four teenagers discover an old game console and are thrust into the virtual world of Jumanji playing as avatars. The trailer features helicopters, motorbikes, explosions, and video-game perks like special character abilities.
Fans have been quick to point out that the sequel, which stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan, is a far stretch from the nostalgic classic. While some are enthusiastic about the change, others have been quick to cast doubt about whether the film will be able to live up to the original.
