EW has released a first look photo and new information about the long awaited third season of USA Network‘s Mr. Robot. After the wild ride in last year’s finale, fans have been desperate to find out what Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) will get up to as he attempts to retake control of his life.
In season two, Elliot was attempting to the undo a hack he perpetrated. Ultimately, the unstable hacker was manipulated in ways he did not fully understand. Elliot believed that Tyrell Wellick (Martin Wallström) was another alternate personality so he continued to work on undoing a plan he had unknowingly set in motion. However, Tyrell appears to be real. He used Darlene’s stolen gun to shoot Elliot in the season finale, and Angela answers the phone and addresses Tyrell by name.
The finale left audiences with more questions than answers, including whether Tyrell and Elliot know each other. In the final episode, Tyrell spoke to Angela shortly after shooting Elliot, and with tears in his eyes, he told her he loved Elliot. This has fans convinced that Tyrell and Elliot are close. That they may have been friends and Elliot has forgotten, or perhaps they are related?
So what can we expect from the third season of Mr. Robot?
In an interview with EW, show creator Sam Esmail revealed information about the upcoming season.
“Season 3 is about Elliot trying to bounce back and fight against the people who have been using him,” said Esmail. “Elliot isn’t going to take this lying down.”
In the season 3 first look, Elliot is back in control and living his life to the fullest. He is back to what he does best: hacking. In fact, we see Elliot in a crowded room with hackers as Elliot decides what to do after learning about Mr. Robot’s phase 2.
Tyrell was missing and on the run for most of the second season after being wanted in connection for the E Corp hack during season one. However, the ex E Corp executive will play a bigger part in the third season. “With Tyrell, we really don’t know much about his whereabouts or what happened to him,” Esmail said. “There’s a lot of that circular storytelling that we really delve into with his character this season.”
Of course, there will be plenty of action in the upcoming season with many questions remained unanswered. Will Darlene (Carly Chaiken) talk to the Feds? What part did Angela (Portia Doubleday) play in Elliot’s shooting? Why has Tyrell returned now? What relationship does Tyrell have with the Dark Army? And do Elliot and Tyrell know each other?
