MTV announces new cast, plot and showrunner for Scream season three

MTV’s Scream is heading in a new direction for its third season, with a fresh cast, a completely revised story, and a new showrunner. The change will see rapper/actor Tyga (aka Michael Ray Stevenson) in a starring role, alongside C.J. Wallace (son of The Notorious B.I.G. and Faith Evans).

The new season will be filmed in Atlanta and focus on Deion Elliot, a local star running back whose past comes back to haunt him, threaten his future and the lives of those he cares about. Jamal (Tyga) is Deion’s step-brother who is a hustler by nature and is willing to work any angle to make ends meet for those he considers family. Jamal and Deion may share the same blood but their worldviews couldn’t be more different. when Jamal’s ambitions don’t line up with Deion’s, it forces them to decide exactly how they fit into each other’s lives.

Amir (Wallace) is a good kid with strict parents who want him to stay away from relationships and work in the family business. But, Amir dreams of making music — a dream he is forced to hide. Until he becomes the target of a killer in a mask. Facing a gruesome end, Amir realises he may want to chase his dreams — if he survives.

In addition to the casting changes, the ambitious reboot has a brand-new showrunner, Supernatural and The Vampire DiariesBrett Matthews. Matthews will also act as an executive producer on the series, alongside actress/rapper Queen Latifah, as well as Shakim Compere and Yaneley Arty, for Flavor Unit Entertainment. Harvey and Bob Weinstein continue to serve as EPs. The late Wes Craven has been named an additional executive producer, alongside Tony DiSanto, Liz Gateley, Marianne Maddalena and Cathy Konrad. Matthew Signer and Keith Levine are producers.

According to MTV, season three of Scream will feature a ‘special binge model’, which means that the season’s six episodes will air during a special three-night event.

MTV sent shockwaves through its Scream fan base when it announced its season three reboot earlier this year. Many fans expressed disappointment in the new direction, which saw the dismissal the show’s veteran cast, and an unfinished cliff-hanger end to its two-season story. Season one and two starred Bex Taylor-Klaus, Willa Fitzgerald, John Karna and Amadeus Serafini.

MTV Scream returns to screens March 2018. Check out fan reactions below:
