Riverdale is about to get a whole lot darker in its second season, as a broody new trailer drops at the show’s San Diego Comic Con Panel. The trailer picks up where the last season left off, with a bloodied Fred Andrews. Archie is seen dragging his father into the hospital, following the brutal shooting that took place at Pop’s Chock’Lit Shoppe in the season finale.
During the SDCC panel, the cast and crew revealed several interesting facts about the upcoming season. Not only will s2 have a much darker tone, but the dramatic events from the season prior will force the show’s main characters to adopt a whole new outlook on the world.
It seems fans will have to say goodbye to the high-spirited Archie, as the events that took place in season one weigh down on him. “There is almost a switch that goes off, and I think 100% there is a completely different side to Archie that we haven’t seen yet,” revealed K.J. Apa.
Jughead will also be going through a change in the second season as he settles into his new school at Southside High. “I think Jughead in season two is placed in two worlds that start to collide and really erupt, and as the season progresses it is going to start forcing him to really pick a side, which is quite a dangerous place for him to be in because he is a very morally grey character,” said Actor Cole Sprouse. “I think it is going to have huge interruptions for his narrative and his relationships with the cast.”
It has been revealed that Riverdale‘s newest character Toni Topaz played by Vanessa Morgan, could get in the way of the romance between Jughead and Betty (ship name Bughead), as she guides Jughead into the serpent world. “She is like a female Jughead so she is trouble,” revealed show creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
Betty and Veronica will also see some character change, the cast members revealed. In the new season Betty comes to terms with darkness “This season it is more like tortured soul Betty,” said actress Lili Reinhart. Meanwhile, her bestie Veronica also faces a difficult time, as her father rejoins the household bringing in more Lodge family secrets that will leave Veronica in the dark. It has been revealed that Veronica will also have an ex to deal with, as the New York lover from her past brings out a whole new side to her.
Riverdale‘s second season will feature a whopping 22-episodes which will give the creators more room to explore characters. “We are going to see more of Kevin Keller, more of Josie and The Pussy Cats, and we are going to be able to do as much crime stuff as we want and have enough time for the characters and relationships and the romances,” said Aguirre-Sacasa.
