Game of Thrones season seven episode five “Eastwatch” finally saw the return of Gendry (Joe Dempsie). The long-missing blacksmith was last seen rowing away from The Red Woman’s clutches all the way back in season three.
To the delight of fans, the lovable Baratheon bastard who had spent quite some time alongside Arya Stark has finally returned sporting a new look and a large hammer. Gendry signed up to join Jon Snow’s expedition North of the Wall, and while their meeting was brief, the pair already seem pretty chummy.
Gendry’s season seven return was no secret, however, no one quite knew when the character would row back onto the screen.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Writer David Hill confirmed that the HBO series had always planned on bringing Gendry back.
“We almost brought him back in season SIX and it didn’t quite work out. We definitely wanted him here for the big mission, and we wanted Robert Baratheon’s bastard son back into the show. It made sense that Davos would want to save this boy who’s like a surrogate son.”
While Gendry’s return certainly excited fans, some couldn’t help but notice the disappointing lack of mention of Arya.
