Greeting and salutations, Heathers and Veronicas alike. A polarising new trailer for the upcoming Paramount Network reboot of Heathers has just dropped.
The 10-episode reboot of the 1988 cult classic is penned by Jason A. Micallef (Butter) and directed by Leslye Hedland (Bachelorette, Sleeping With Other People) and promises a modern twist on the beloved dark comedy.
With the recent popularity of Heathers: The Musical, Paramount may have been banking on resounding anticipation for the series, however, a number of factors have left fans asking: What is your damage, Paramount?
Gone are the days of perms, shoulder pads and croquet; the teaser portrays Heather Chandler (Melanie Field), Heather McNamara (Jasmine Matthews) and Heather Duke (Brendan Scannell) sporting modern, millennial haircuts and blingy outfits which seem to be pulled directly from the wardrobe of Alexis Neiers and her squad.
It isn’t unusual for a cult classic remake to be on the receiving end of fan criticism, and the Heathers reboot is no exception. Fans had a lot to say about the characters’ change of appearance. It seems that not only has the look of the Heathers changed but so has Wynona Ryder’s angst-ridden Veronica Sawyer (Grace Victoria Cox) who looks much more Degrassi than she does Westerburg High.
Fans of the film took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the modern take:

In the trailer Veronica Sawyer delivers the famous line “well f**k me gently with a chainsaw,” a quote that is originally spoken by Heather Chandler. Let’s just say, the line mix-up is not a good indicator of things to come for fans of a film which is famous for delivering iconic dialogue and hilarious one-liners.
On the other hand, judgment may be hasty, audiences have only been treated with a glance of the edgy and mysterious cherry slushie buying J.D. (James Scully) and haven’t even got a taste of the iconic OTP Ram (Cayden Boyd) and Kurt (Cameron Gellman).
Traditionalists may also be happy to note that cameos by two-thirds of the OG Heathers have been promised by Selma Blair and Shannen Doherty! Hopefully, this is a sign of good things to come.
Regardless, fans of the original will have to see if it’s chaos that killed the Heathers or if the new show will be so totally very!
Heathers is due for release in 2018 on the Paramount Network. Check out the trailer below:
