Get ready for a blast from the past, because The CW and Warner Bros. Television are developing a Sabrina the Teenage Witch series!
While the name Sabrina might bring cheery 90s nostalgia, the CW’s potential upcoming series definitely won’t be the magical light-hearted sitcom you remember. Based on the Archie comics ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’, the show aims to bring your favorite blonde witch into the darkness.
Variety reports that the show has good potential to get the go-ahead. If the series does make it to screens, the re-imagining will tell the origin and adventures of Sabrina as a dark coming-of-age story in a horror setting. The creators will take inspiration from cult horror classics such as Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will see Spellman wrestle to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while standing against forces that threaten her, her family, and the ‘daylight’ world humans inhabit.
The gritty premise is a far cry from the 2-time Emmy nominated Melissa Joan Hart series that spanned seven seasons, but if the CW has proved anything, it is that they can transform any story into a sexy and mysterious dark-drama.
Should the series move forward, the show will serve as a companion to the show Riverdale, which also brought The Archie Comics into a dark setting – thrusting Archie and the gang into a bloody murder mystery. A companionship between the two series brings hope for a potential crossover episode.
Which begs the question, will we see Sabrina the Teenage Witch share a milkshake with Archie and the gang at Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe?!
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, chief creative officer of Archie Comics, will serve as writer and executive producer. Lee Toland Krieger, who has directed multiple episodes of Riverdale will direct and executive produce. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater–all executive producers on Riverdale–will also executive produce. Berlanti Productions will produce the show in association with Warner Bros. TV.
Given Berlanti’s long-standing relationship with the CW, it seems likely that the show will be ordered. Berlanti executive produces the hit series Riverdale, Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl for the network.
Stay tuned for more news about The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as it comes.
