Focus Features has released the first trailer for the period fashion drama Phantom Thread, which is likely to be Daniel Day-Lewis‘ final acting role before retirement.
Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, Phantom Thread follows a renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville), who are at the centre of the British fashion industry, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames. Women in Woodcock’s life come and go, until a romance with young, strong willed-Alma (Vicky Krieps) disrupts his carefully tailored life, with love.
The Phantom Thread marks the second collaboration between director Paul Thomas Anderson and actor Day-Lewis, who teamed up in 2007 for the academy award-winning film There Will Be Blood. The film will be Day-Lewis’ first acting role in five years, since the 2012 film Lincoln – and is likely to be his last on-screen performance having announced his retirement in June.
According to Variety Day-Lewis’ spokeswoman, Leslee Dart, confirmed the news saying, “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject. ”
Phantom Thread will premiere in theaters on Dec. 25. Check out the trailer below:
