Netflix has released a dark teaser trailer and date announcement for their upcoming science fiction television epic Altered Carbon.
Based on the popular novel by Richard K. Morgan, the trailer for the long-awaited adaptation brings some serious Black Mirror and Blade Runner 2049 vibes, showing off a dark but glamorous neon-coated cyberpunk world set more than 300-years into the future.
The 10-episode series revolves around a society that no longer needs to fear death because their consciousness can be digitized and downloaded into a “cortical stack” where they can live forever. Bodies or ‘sleeves’ are now interchangeable, and disposable, in a system where the wealthy can remain young indefinitely.
The hardboiled series follows Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman), the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against a new world order. His mind was imprisoned, “on ice”, for centuries until the wealthy long-lived man Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), offers Kovacs the chance to live again. In exchange, Kovacs has to solve a murder … that of Bancroft himself.
Altered Carbon will launch on Netflix Friday, February 2. Check out the trailer below:
