Jon Favreau casts Donald Glover and James Earl Jones in The Lion King

Donald Glover The Lion King

Director Jon Favreau has announced that Donald Glover and James Earl Jones will be taking lead roles in the live action re-imagining of the 1994 Walt Disney classic The Lion King.

Favreau tweeted the announcement earlier today, confirming casting for the role of Simba, plus the return of Mufasa.

The news was later retweeted by Walt Disney Studios‘ twitter account, which dispelled any rumours that the tweets were depicting desired cast members, rather than those already chosen for the roles.

Favreau‘s tweets confirmed that Donald Glover (Community, The Martian) will be taking the role of the loveable lion cub Simba and that James Earl Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) would return to his role as the iconic Mufasa.

The re-imaging follows in the footsteps of remade Disney classics MaleficentCinderella, and The Jungle Book. The two-time Grammy Award-winning film The Lion King (1994) has had enormous success, garnering a lifetime box office of a whopping $968.8 million.
