With only a month left until its release, Hulu has finally dropped the disturbing trailer for their Original series The Handmaid’s Tale. Based on the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, the creepy first look at the upcoming film depicts the dystopian society Gilead, where fertile women are forced to become Handmaids who act as surrogates for powerful men and their wives. The series stars Elisabeth Moss as Offred the Handmaid, and Joseph Fiennes as The Commander.
If you are worried about how the classic novel will translate to the small screen, never fear, in a Reddit AMA Author Margaret Atwood praised the upcoming adaptation giving the show a 10/10.
“Have only seen (pre-screened) 3 episodes so far, but based on what I’ve seen it’s a 10,”
“My criteria: puddle of goo on the floor my end of Episode 3. Gasp. Shriek. It goes farther than I did in the book…”
The Handmaid’s Tale tells the dystopian story of life in the totalitarian society Gilead, formerly known as the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism. As one of the remaining fertile women, Offred (Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, and is one of many women forced into sexual servitude in a desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this horrifying society, Offred must survive in a world where anyone could be a spy for Gilead, while navigating between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas and fellow Handmaids – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.
The Handmaid’s Tale is set to premiere on Hulu April 26.
