Thanks to EW, Ernest Cline fans have finally been blessed with a first look photo of Ready Player One from the upcoming 2018 Steven Spielberg adaptation.
The image depicts protagonist Wade Watts, otherwise known by his screen-name Parzival, engrossed in the world of Oasis in his junkyard hideout. In addition to giving us a sneak-peek of Tye Sheridan (Mud, The Tree of Life) in the lead role, the first-look image shows off some easter eggs, as well as a noticeable book to movie change.
The young adult sci-fi novel Ready Player One gained a huge fan base following its 2011 release, partly because of its nostalgic references to 80s nerd-culture. If the first image from the upcoming adaptation is anything to go by, it looks like the film will follow in the books footsteps, bringing pop-culture references that will make fans reminisce over their geeky childhood faves.
Here are some of the easter eggs spotted in the photo:
1. Bike Generator and weight
In the book, Parzival was forced to use a bike to generate old car batteries in order to run his Oasis Rig. “It was usually the only physical exercise I got each day,” the character says. Speaking of physical exercise, it looks like there will be at least one major book-movie change.
Fans of the book may pick up on is the fact that Wade seems a whole lot skinnier in the film to how he was described in the beginning of the book. While the protagonist does eventually get into shape in the book, this doesn’t happen until much further down the track.
2. Egg cartons and lunch box
While some elements of the film seem to have changed, other small-details have been incorporated. For instance, much like book Wade, movie Wade also uses egg cartons to absorb the sound from his Junkyard hideout, so that nobody finds out about the equipment hiding inside.
Near the egg cartons, we also see a Masters of the Universe tin lunchbox, and selection of pop-culture stickers on the wall, including Garfield, and Garbage Pail Kids.
3. James Halliday news clips
James Donovan Halliday, the creator of OASIS, is seen on news paper and magazine clippings sprawled across the hideout walls.
“Since 2021 More then [sic] 20 Million VR Headsets Sold” reads a newspaper headline. “Is James Halliday playing games … or playing God?” reads another from ‘Bloomberg Businessweek’.
It is no secret that Wade has a major obsession with the visionary behind the OASIS, and an insatiable need to figure out how to reach the Easter Egg hidden inside.
“I devoured each of what Halliday referred to as “The Holy Trilogies”: Star Wars (original and prequel trilogies, in that order), Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Mad Max, Back to the Future, and Indiana Jones. (Halliday once said that he preferred to pretend the other Indiana Jones films, from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull onward, didn’t exist. I tended to agree.) I also absorbed the complete filmographies of each of his favorite directors. Cameron, Gilliam, Jackson, Fincher, Kubrick, Lucas, Spielberg, Del Toro, Tarantino. And, of course, Kevin Smith. I spent three months studying every John Hughes teen movie and memorizing all the key lines of dialogue.” – Ernest Cline, Ready Player One.
What we still don’t know
While the first image gives a pretty good sneak peek at the upcoming film the picture does leave one burning question, how will Spielberg bring the OASIS to life?
